Sea Otter Pup Gets an X-Ray

Posted by Daily Otter

Via Alaska SeaLife Center, which writes:

During our weeks of caring for Un’a, the orphaned female sea otter pup from Homer, our veterinary and animal care teams have been closely monitoring her arm injury.

Radiographs revealed an unusual growth plate fracture near her elbow (a Salter-Harris type II fracture), which, to our knowledge, has not been seen in otters before.

While she sometimes holds her arm at a slight angle, she’s using it regularly and shows no signs of discomfort. Luckily for Un’a, floating is a big part of her day, and it means minimal weight on the injury.

In the wild, this could have been a serious setback. But under professional care, we’re optimistic it won’t impact her long-term welfare. Our team will continue to observe her closely and carefully consider options, including surgery, if she shows signs of pain or limited use.

These photos show Un’a during a recent veterinary exam under sedation. While she was asleep, our team carefully assessed her injury through physical manipulation, took radiographs, and used a K-laser to help promote tissue healing—all before she woke up.

New Zealand slang needed please 🙏

I write RPF and due to sheer stupidity thought a guy (L) was Australian but he's from New Zealand 🤦‍♀️ Is there anyone who could translate these Australianisms (which I really love and got from Home & Away and Neighbours) into New Zealandisms? I don't watch any NZ soaps.#

JUST TO ADD: this is a fun, fluffy story, nothing gritty, angsty or serious. It is only just in the T rating, mainly because of a few dodgy comments. It could pass as G probably but better safe than sorry.

Also, do New Zealanders play keepy uppy? When you bounce a football on your knee and see how many times you can do that without dropping it. A well known British game but maybe it's called something different in New Zealand?

~~~
“G’day mate,” said the Australian. “Sorry, we're playing keepy uppy and the ball got away from us.” He was smirking as he picked up the football.
“Don't be such a flaming galah.” L threw the ball at N.
“Strewth mate, that’s 50 already.”
“Here we are,” said L. “Enjoy, you pair of hoons.”
Hooray Oregon!
Posted by Daily Otter
This comes via Monterey Bay Aquarium, which writes:
Congrats to our west coast neighbor, Oregon, for launching their program to manage packaging, paper, and plastic food ware! This big step will modernize Oregon's recycling system by increasing recycling rates, reducing waste, and improving access to recycling services while shifting costs to producers who create the waste in the first place. In California, SB 54 is poised to go a step further by reducing the amount of single-use plastic produced. Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 54 into law to reduce costs for consumers by making producers pay for the waste they produce.
This Plastic Free July, we are encouraging Governor Gavin Newsom to break up with plastic and remember that robust implementation of SB 54 is the consumer and environment friendly thing to do.
“We applaud Oregon for stepping up to address single-use plastic. With SB 54, California has the chance to go even further by not just managing plastic waste, but preventing it.” – Amy Wolfrum, director of California Policy and Government Affairs, Monterey Bay Aquarium.
We can make a world without plastic that’s healthier for people and our ocean planet.
See Footage From Sea Otter Pup Un'a's Admit Exam
Posted by Daily Otter
Via Alaska SeaLife Center, which writes:
It’s hard to believe how far little Un’a, the orphaned sea otter pup admitted in May 2025, has come.
When she was first rescued, she was fragile and underweight. Every feeding and time resting was critical in those early days, as you’ll see in this video. We’ve been busy responding to a wave of harbor seal patients, but Un’a has been quietly making big strides behind the scenes.
Now, just over a month into care, she’s thriving: healthy, eating solids, and showing off her playful personality. She’s definitely earned her moment in the spotlight!
Just a Sleepy Sea Otter Pup
Via Alaska SeaLife Center, which writes:
Our “Homer boy” otter patient is resting, recovering, and reminding us to slow down…
Do you see the breeze on the pup's fur? That is from a fan, which we use to help ensure that his coat gets thoroughly dry and captures extra air to help keep him warm—something that Mom would achieve by blowing into his coat.
Happy first rescueversary to sea otter Luna! Found separated from her mother on Vargas Island near Tofino, BC on this day in 2024, she was deemed non-releasable and transferred to the Vancouver Aquarium alongside pup Tofino later that year.
Home
I just took my hearing aids out because I’m trying to watch TV and the social club across the road from my home has just started to play host to live music. With my aids in, the TV and the music were an absolute jumble.
What Is This Magic?
Posted by Daily Otter
Via Seattle Aquarium - now, the aquarium didn’t want to just show you a cute picture, they wanted to tell you this:
If you’ve ever been to the Seattle Aquarium, you’ve seen the impact of policy that protects vulnerable species.
Sea otters (like Mishka here) were once on the brink of extinction with as little as 1,000–2,000 otters remaining in the U.S. population. Now, thanks to laws like the Endangered Species Act (ESA), sea otter populations are recovering—but that could change with recent threats to this vital legislation.
Currently, the ESA has saved 99% of species listed on it from extinction. Let's make sure it stays that way. Contact your federal legislators in both chambers of congress and urge them to protect and strengthen the ESA, not weaken it. We've made it easy with three simple steps and a template to follow when contacting your representatives.
I’ll contact my reps if you contact yours!
Baby's First Bottle Feeding
Posted by Daily Otter
Via Alaska SeaLife Center, which writes:
Our cameras were lucky enough to be in our quarantined Wildlife Response area to film Homer boy’s very first bottle feed!
Not all orphaned otter pup patients adjust to taking formula from a bottle well. It’s quite different from suckling milk from their mothers, so it’s always a win for our team (and the otter!) when a pup takes to a bottle quickly. His first time trying the bottle was a little messy, but since then, this little pup has mastered the bottle.
And, of course, dinner is always followed by a swim and a bath!
This little guy, “Homer boy,” is the same from this post from about a week ago.
