Not so short uptdate
No New Year's Post this year. Been busy.
Went (indoor, of course) bouldering today, second time this year, fourth time since the choir performance on Dec 2: The two months before that I had put pretty much everything but work and role playing games on hold, as to not risk getting sick.
For the first time since my accident in August 2016 I managed all the easy-easy problems, attempted a few easy ones and solved two -- one quite unexpectedly. In the end, it was not my nerve that failed me (which has been the usual annoying state of things since the accident), but my arm strength. Which can be regained. I put in 15 minutes of weight training in the new weight room, and went home exhausted, but happy. (Still am! See "mood" icon!)
Other things:
I watched "The Last Jedi" and enjoyed it subverting the serie's tropes. Crazy commando raids fail, chaos is fun but not much use, ace flying is not the magic bullet, the lovable rogue is not trustworthy, the conflicted Sith is out for himself, the wise old master has no answers, the Force does just fine without Sith or Jedi, and the heroine lacks prodigious family connections. (I hope it stays that way.) In general, I felt the movie was a bit too fond of killing lots of extras to show how desperate the heroes are. It became kind of absurd. And I cannot get over the futility of it all. Palpatine had ruled only about 20 years, with the Republic being the one great "before", so, in 40 years after the disposal of that aberration, no one managed to make anything good or lasting off it? Depresses the shit out of me. But, pretty pictures! Great design! Cute animated animals!
On Jan 6 we did the roughly triennial LotR Special Edition marathon at Ceridwen's place. Pressed the "Start" button at 10 a.m., had a short break in the early evening to heat the prepared supper, then continued watching until 9:30 p.m. My backside hurt from sitting on the sofa that much, but it was a nice day. I had forgotten many details of the Special Edition, and found new and unexpected applicability. I also liked the humorous characters a lot more than before. I am sure that Gimli is playing the fool very much on purpose, at least after Moria.
Around New Year, A___ and L___ were visiting, flederkatz stayed over a few nights, we played our "School for Gifted Youngsters" SF high school drama. We also revised the rules, the character sheets, and the characters, I went to work most days and cared for K___'s and mad_freddy's high-maintenance cat (who had to stay indoors this time of years and was suffering from severe boredom). The fireworks were very good, the weather deceptively mild, and in the early hours of the 2nd I kind of collapsed from exhaustion with a headache, sore teeth and sore sinuses. However, staying in bed for a day and everyone being gone when I woke up restored me quite nicely. I like having my friends around, but I tend to reach the limits of my emotional resilience after a few days.
