Attempting to use public transport -- week 1
I do not enjoy driving a car to work, and it was too cold for me to bicycle to work this week, not to mention the state of the streets. Fortunately, there is currently a ticket, costing 49 Euros a month (nominally), which is valid for all local and regional public transport. Actually it cost me only about 37 Euro, as the government is discounting it, and my employer refunds me part of it, too. So, traveling about 17 km by commuter train and then 3 km by local bus should be really simple and comfortable?
Monday at eight in the morning I got my car to the garage for repairs. Checked the local public transport app for connections to my place of work. Uh, there's one every two hours? Should be two or three per hour, Wait, I read there had been snow in Munich, 200-something kilometres from here. That probably explains it. At least the next train will be leaving in 20 minutes.
I walked 5 minutes to the station, while a few lonely snowflakes tumbled out of the moderately cold sky. Only to find that the train would be 15 minutes late, so I would miss the connecting bus, and I would not be at work until a quarter to ten.
I walked another ten minutes to my employer's chartered shuttle bus, that connects the three sites in the area, and was at work at nine.
In the afternoon, the app still was unconvinced that there would be a connection. So, shuttle bus again.
Tuesday the garage called me in the morning that my car was done. I looked out of the window and noticed rain falling on the frozen ground. "How are the road conditions?" I asked. "Well... better pick up the car around noon..."
So I worked from home until noon (I hate that), picked up the car around noon and drove to work, because my productivity from home is abysmal, and there was stuff I needed to finish, I had to be somewhere else at 5 p.m. and I could not have made it by commuter train and bus.
Wednesday I had to be at one of our other sites at 10. Unfortunately the last shuttle bus runs at a quarter to nine. Taking the bicycle to the site and then to the train station would have been an option, but it was raining, and I chickened out. Another car driving day. At least the car purred like a happy kitten, whatever the garage did, it worked.
Thursday is my day off. I went to the city for shopping by commuter train, and at was fast, comfortable, free of rain, snow, or ice, and on time.
Friday the train drivers were on strike and there was no public transport. Considering the likely amount of traffic: Another work-from-home day. At least I hat nothing complicated to do, and Tully the Tabby was content to sit on my lap instead of on the keyboard.
So, that's one day out of five. Let's see how next week turns out.
