Latest (kind of) news on depression
Sep. 1st, 2008 05:24 pmOK, it's from July but I only just stumbled upon this:
http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/07/06/head_fake/.
They describe depression as a degenarative illness of the brain cells which is reversable. What medication does it help the brain cells heal. This is interesting in a lot of ways, not least of which is that it puts environmental factors back in the picture. (Of course, some illnesses blamed on "lifestyle" when I was a kid turned out to be infections, so I'm curious what else might turn up.) It also means, if I understand correctly, that it might be possible to see depression in the brain in the form of athropied cells.
