Fava beans

I should have created images from the start, as it is amazing how 500 grams of veggies become 100 grams of edibles.

To prepare beans: Peel them from their pods, blanch in boiling salt water for two minutes, then put in ice water for a short time, drain, squeeze every single bean from its skin. Easier if you cut a slit into the narrow side of the bean with a sharp knife.

So, that's your beans. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes in salt water, then drain, catch a cup of the draining water if you want any kind of sauce, or even for bean mush.

I slowly fried a bit of bacon and a sliced green onion in a bit of butter, deglazed the pan with a splash of the cooking water, put the beans in and let them cook on low for about three more minutes.

As often with beans, the smell was not too good (like old socks), but the taste was way better! And they are very green.

We didn't play today, because one player is on vacation, another has three tests to take tomorrow, and the one characters has been turned into a fox: This left the party with one fighter, not enough to continue with the adventure.

Instead, we had dinner, and the idea to play some broad games, but we got lost in talking.

In other news, I got Secunda from the repair shop today.

I cooked this for the gaming group today, and it was fast and simple, and very tasty. I had expected it to turn out well (obviously), but in fact it was even better. It's also vegetarian and can be made vegan with little effort. Get the kale frozen and already chopped, or it will not be fast... The following will probably feed six. If you want to make sure it's enough, just make more pasta.

In other news, I bicycled to work today although temperatures were below freezing. It was fun, but now my throat hurts. My new coat does not close well over the chest. I am trying to get an outdoor jacket. So far I have not found one that I liked.

Finally, summer has come, and with it sunburn, biting insects, crowded pools, and, finally, summer veggies!

Now, the thing with veggies is, if you want to serve them as the main dish, you need lots of them, because they consist mostly of taste, shiny and water. If you want to feed six to eight people, you need a big pot. Or oven dish. So, I present, The Ratatouille of Extraordinary Size )

We didn't get around to gaming much, but it was not the fault of the food, which is low-effort both in cooking and in serving, but because some players had to put in overtime at work.

Yesterday we had oven squash and rice. I have been asked for the recipe, so here it is.

For dessert, we had Apple rolls )

My boss has a vegetable garden, and as vegetable gardens do, it produces food according to season, not according to appetite, storage capacity, or vacation plans.

So last week he brought a bunch of thick-skinned cucumbers to work to find them a new home. I took one, and as it was not a common salad cucumber, wondered what to do about it.

Here's what I did )
