After finally finishing the story with the horse traders/thieves/whatever, the group had been comfortably (for a bunch of experienced adventurers) travelling south-west and doing touristy things. They were looking forward to some rest, fun, shopping, and gear maintenance in the next big city.

Not far from the city gate they met a small trade caravan, hauling pots, kettles, tools and ironware, woollen cloth, tobacco and whiskey. The caravan leader was an old friend of the group's scout from her bouncer days. Some of the guards had decided they'd rather join a mercenary company unless they got paid a lot better, and the caravan leader kind of recruited the group to "travel together", which got her six very competent guards for free.

They came into the city late but the gates were opened for them. The caravan broke up, the group stayed with the friend and her two wagons of ironware, heading for a (kind of) caravanserai. They did not expect to be crowded and attacked by several dozens of beggars, tramps, and low-level thugs two blocks from their goal.

With six adventurers in the group things got very lively very fast. (Think: horns sounding, magic light effects, well-trained horses acting up, whole neighbourhood waking up, cursing the noise, throwing chamber pots and calling for the watch... The characters really did not want to kill civilians, not even annoying ones.) A few of the robbers grabbed something from the carts and ran, the group's barbarian in hot pursuit -- and quite baffled when the thieves jumped into a well and disappeared.

After the city watch had restored the peace and arrested any attacker still on site, the group learned that the carts had transported two boxes with specially commissioned jewels, which no one should have known about but the caravan leader and the purchaser, a very wealthy and well-connected jewel merchant.

The characters feel that there will be a substantial reward offered soon. The players suspect there will be a dungeon. Not really a spoiler: Both assumptions are correct.
