The neighbors are having a party, and now it's close to midnight, one guy is playing the guitar (not very well), and singing (not too bad). I can make out most of the songs. Currently it's "Skyfall".

I would enjoy being there, but listening isn't too bad, either. There's a magic in this.

I promised some journal-y things, mostly to myself, because I dread looking back at the year in December and think, "2013, did that year even happen? What did I do?"

So, here they are.

I feel that I'm getting tired, or lazy, or focused on the basics. Some tasks start to get moved from one day to another, never completed. I do too much of nothing, and not even the things I want to do when I have nothing else to do.

In part I blame the weather, but mostly the need to meet some carpenter or plumber or electrician every darned morning, so I never can start a day rested and energetic.

Things are happening in my life, and if I do not give myself amnesty for all the postings I meant to write, I will never write another posting again, I feel. So, amnesty given.

What's going on, in short. Well, kind of. )

And that's it, more or less. Well, less, actually despite this being a long post. It has been a long year. And now there are Christmas decorations outside in the grey and dry November overcast.

Thursday to Sunday of last week (June 7th to 10th), the choir I sing in was at the 2012 Choir Festival in Frankfurt. That was fun.

The Rest of the Week )

For the weekend, there's a weather forecast of heavy rain or sleet, and strong winds. I very much hope for it. November was dead boring, and first Sunday of Advent felt like late October, with leaves still on the trees. I can only take so much nice weather, and this November was really pushing it.

The commute is doing me no good. The situation at work is doing me no good. I'm cold and tired all the time. I feel that I eat enough, yet I am always desperately hungry for sugar. Several times this week my hands were shaking so hard I could not use a cell phone unless I braced it on my knees. I am moody and I have the mental resilience of a soap bubble. I behave like a drama queen and I just cannot stop myself. Read more... )

Had to get up early again -- this is starting to become a habit, and a very annoying one. Our choir had a performance at an International Women's Day event organised by the local women's group of the Social Democrat Party. Meet Ms Ranty McRant, i.e. me )

#1: If you go to a party in the middle of the week where half the guests do not have to work the next day, and you have to: Set an alarm clock to tell you when it's time to leave. Knowing you, you probably won't, anyway, but at least you'll spare yourself the "Oops, gah, WTF!!!11!1" moment.

#2: The fact that can improvise harmonies really well does not excuse your from practising now and again, so that you might actually sing the piece as it is written, not as you think it should be.

And Monday it was back to work (*very big sigh*). I am tired, especially of winter. Especially of a winter with so much cold and so little blue sky.

Mid-February to early March is always one of the busiest times of the year for me. There are two birthdays -- Gwydion's and mine -- with the mandatory large party where we meet some people we see only once a year, and there's International Women's Day, where my choir is usually performing at some place or the other, with a quite ambitious program.

It is, however, also the time where I have some vacation left over from the previous year which needs to be spent before it gets stale, which balances things.

Not so this year -- one of my projects was finishing, another starting, and both would have kept me busy even without the heaps of papers that needed to be written and reviewed. So a week of vacation was out of the question.

And the moment everything was done and normality should have returned, I came down with one of my usual knock-me-out-for-a-week colds.

Cut for a boring list of days and things done. )

1. The town I live in is home of an "Irish independend speedfolk" band of slightly more than local fame.

2. I just got for R___'s daughter, who's with a girl scout group and loves the songs, two CDs from the Hamburger Singewettstreit (Hamburg singing contest). One girl group covered a song of the above band (beautifully), believing the band to be Irish.

1+2 has me LOLing.

Makes me feel old, though. I bet the girls weren't born when I went to the first live concert of the band.

Great band practise today -- good day for the voices, I was really at home in the semi-high range, Ceridwen did two-octave jumps in the harmonies gracefully, we all remembered our parts and most of the lyrics, and Gwydion's drumming is really getting into shape. I, as usual, needed heaps of validation, because with singing I never know if I'm any good or merely delusional. Fortunately, both Ceridwen and Gwydion know me long enough to not mind (I hope).

For the first time I managed to somewhat recover my lower range after losing it on the usual songs. (I have no stamina at all in the alto range, two songs and it's gone together with my speaking voice.) And I got up to a decent high Bb during warm-up. I wish I could do that in choir singing.

Too bad that we rarely have time to practise on Saturdays. I feel that a lot of what went well was due to the fact that it was weekend, and we weren't stressed out. (Although Ceridwen and I had spent the afternoon shopping, which was hard work IMO.)

Usually, when I have spent three hours singing, I'm high. I might be riddled with self-doubt and deeply discontent with my performance, my competence, my voice, and my general intelligence, but still I'm high, physically, just from music and breathing.

Doesn't happen when I come from choir practise lately, and I blame the room. Cut for rantage )

Yesterday I was visiting R--- again. It's strange that we only meet two or three times a year, although she lives less then 10km away. I meet [livejournal.com profile] flederkatz more often, and she lives on the other side of the country.
