Today morning I was at the eye clinic to have checked if laser eye surgery could fix my myopia and astigmatism.
Examination was quick and nearly painless, waiting room had lots of acceptable magazines and free coffee and cookies. The benefits of private clinics. (OTOH, at 50 Euros for the examination, this was quite expensive coffee and cookies.) Result of the examination was, no way can they do anything. Myopia and astigmatism add up to -9 dioptres, the maximum correction my cornea could take would be 4. To implant a lens, they'd need 3 mm (?) of space, I have barely 2. My eyes, it seems, are meant for a person much smaller than me.
So, that answers a question I've been pondering for years with a resounding "no". Which leaves me strangely relieved, because if it had been a "yes, if you want to" I still would have had to make a decision. Anyway, there went my excuse not to do anything to get better glasses. Which won't make me lose by balance on level ground, and still give me more than the 40% visual acuity my current glasses provide. (And they are already messing up my balance. Nearly fell off the curb today.)

Date: 2011-10-25 04:27 pm (UTC)That's why I have the numbers. I like to whack people with numbers.
But it's frustrating. I had hoped to get rid of the contacts, because I can't wear them as well as I used to. One day per week on average I have to switch to glasses, and than it feels as if my thoughts are moving through peanut butter, because I have to make up my whole environment from insufficient visual data :-(
