Art, science, religion, useful knowledge, useless info, the usual amount of weirdness, and my latest reading.
ART
Time has an Interview with Neil Gaiman and Joss Whedon. It seems to be part 1 of 3, and "not the most accurate transcription you'll ever read". Still, fun. About movies and comics and superheros and the lost geekdom.
SCIENCE
Hurricane FAQ, or, Everything you never really wanted to know about hurricanes (unless you're a weather addict). My personal favourite is Why not to nuke Hurricanes. (Because then you have flooding that glows in the dark! Duh. Well, there are more reasons.)
"The genetic determinists are wrong. There are few inborn differences between men and women." says this article in the Guardian. Unfortunately it lacks all the interesting details.
Philosophy: How Belief In A Just World Hampers Justice.
RELIGION (or not)
Secular societies seem to be less dysfunctional.. Does that surprise anyone?
Intelligent Design, or, God(s) at Work.
USEFUL KNOWLEDGE
Jim MacDonald at Making Light explains How To Do Triage
How to Compare Unemployment Numbers
USELESS INFO
What kind of staff would a Victorian household have?
The Contents of Ration Packs
"Pirates of the Caribbean" Costume Study. Pretty pictures.
RHETORIC
Fighting the Moral Decay of "Those People": "I'm [...] not sure [...] that [...] America can stand the strain of all these wealthy white folks invading our neighborhoods and sending things all to hell"
A Fanficcers reply to an anti-slash flamer. Sweet.
WEIRDNESS
(with a lot of pictures.)
Magic: The Gathering + Hurricane Katrina. AAAAARGH.
If Goths Ruled -- A Picture Contest
QUOTES
"Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds and six, result misery."
--- Micawber (in Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield")
RECENT READING
Terry Pratchett: Night Watch
I'm re-reading this for the third time know, and it's still brilliant.
Charlie Stross: Iron Sunrise.
Fun. It seems I'm out of the loop re:current SF genre conventions, though.
Lois McMaster Bujold: The Hallowed Hunt
Pretty, but weak-ish on plot.
Stan Sakai: Usagi Yojimbo #19 -- Fathers and Sons
Good as usual. The drawing style is less 'nervous' than it was in #18. I'm relieved, I feared it was a trend.
Joss Whedon & some other people: Serenity
The comic books. Hm. I want to like that, but it's very little story for the pages filled.
That's all for now...
