or, How to Fry Bacon in the Microwave.

Take slice of bacon (one to two millimetres thick). If it doesn't fit on the plate, cut it in half. Take two paper towels, fold once, put on plate. Put bacon on towels. Take another paper towel. Put on top of bacon. Microwave on high for 90 seconds.

Fried in a pan is still better, but if you only want one quick slice and no smell of fried bacon hanging around, microwaving is an OK alternative.

Mm, bacon! Something to keep in mind. :)

I remember my flatmate had some kind of cookbook for students with a section for cooking using only the microwave. There was a recipe for lasagna, with both sauces made from scratch, without using a frying pan or oven once. (Microwave the mince until brown...)

Microwaves are wondrous things, especially if you're stuck for time, but it's possible to take things too far!

At home, I'd never think about using the microwave for cooking, but as I'm currently living in a hotel room with a kitchenette, the pan that comes with the kitchenette is useless (uneven bottom, and tends to overbalance), and the dishwasher won't get any utensil clean that has come in contact with anything more sticky than noodles and tomato sauce... yeah for microwave ;-)

I rather sympathise... I've never lived in a place without at least a stove and oven before, but since I moved away from home I have also never lived in a place with a properly working oven before (oh, some of the stories I could tell...). Since I like making various bakes (casseroles? Er, Auflaeufe) this gets frustrating. Say, for instance, when your potato gratin suddenly needs four hours to cook instead of one. >_<
Plus, I may come to be living in a college in a few years' time where the only kitchen thing I have access to is a microwave. Since I like cooking even if I don't do it as much as I wish, I'd better think of something.

That said - dishwasher? Why, you have luxury accomodation indeed.

"casserole" sounds OK for "Auflauf" ...

It's rather nice. Large room, too -- larger than the apartment I had during my university days. And, best thing, I'm not paying for it ;-)

However, I found that I'd rather have a sink that holds water (maybe I just haven't found the plug yet?) than an inefficient dishwasher. (Best would be a functional sink and an efficient dishwasher, but I do not even have that at home.)
