Big Cat just crashed the scratching post -- one of those ceiling-high things with multiple platforms and everything. Fortunately he did it while I was sitting right next to it and could do instant damage control, i.e. hold the two parts together until Big Cat had safely found his way down, and then lower the whole mess gently to the floor without smashing the window, the cats, the plants or the computer.

Big Cat is in for a hard time now, because the scratching post used to be his "You suck. Leave me alone."-place.

Also, I might have to call garbage removal because there is no way I can shove the remains into the garbage container and leave enough space that the neighbors won't cry bloody murder. Oh well, at least I can get rid of those three-and-a-half legged IKEA chairs at the same time.

Timber - Rebuild?

Maybe one could kind of rebuild the thing, using the platforms and other resting places and build another, more reliable structure to bolt them onto? Perhaps some beams forming a rather high and narrow X, which is wedged between floor and ceiling by narrowing the X (using some threaded rod or similar), thereby forcing it to become taller. At least in one direction this should be much more stable than a single column, which can wobble in each direction quite easily.

Some of the plastic connections have broken, and the whole thing has been very ratty (catty?) anyway, so I think I'll just buy a new one today. Maybe one that doesn't quite go up to the ceiling, so I can get the cat down if I want to and he doesn't... But bolting it to the wall is a very good idea, as the cats won't stop crashing into it (can't call that jumping) at full speed.
