I just discovered that for one person travelling about 600 km who needs stops of unsure lengths en route, renting a car plus paying for petrol at 1,40 Euro a litre cost about the same as taking the train. And its not even a Smart car. And rental is far easier to do than buying a train ticket.

Date: 2008-01-31 04:14 pm (UTC)Aside from high speed on prime routes, there are also night trains. If by chance you want to go from a place where they start to a place where they end and are able to book far in advance, that is pretty cheap, too. And it saves you a day or so of travel time.
Well, at least they got their dispute settled, so there'll be less train people on strike...
